Medicaid Extract (MAX) and Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System Analytic Files (TAF) data contain claims for medical care and outpatient drug benefits received by beneficiaries with Medicaid insurance coverage, the state-run programs for low-income and categorically eligible individuals and families. CoDES has in-house MAX data for over >120 million beneficiaries residing in the 29 most populous states from 1999-2010 (AL, AR, CA, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, WV) and national data (all 50 states plus the District of Columbia) from 2011-2022. The 29 states included in the 1999-2010 MAX data represent 85% of all Medicaid beneficiaries. TAF data, which succeeded the MAX data format with a transition period in 2014-2015 is available for all states from 2014 to 2022.
Data quality varies across states, years and plan type (FFS and comprehensive managed care), which is summarized for MAX in annual state-specific validation reports and anomalies tables, and for TAF data in the DQ Atlas. Based on this information, CoDES has created a curated data set that restricts data to specific state/year/plan type combinations that have acceptable data quality. CoDES also has a master patient file that extracts enrollment periods of patients in this curated dataset that meet definitions of comprehensive coverage (no dual enrollment, no private insurance, no restricted benefits).
The number of unique enrollees in Master Patient files per year and aggregate across years is displayed in Tables 1 and 2.

CoDES also maintains a validated pregnancy cohort and validated mother-infant linkages. All Medicaid data are also available in the Sentinel Common Data Model format.
Medicaid data have been linked to birth certificates from the Florida Department of Health (1999-2020) and Texas Department of State Health Services (1999-2012).
Medicaid data have also been linked to UF Health EHR records, starting in 2013.
